Monjez Temple

Akkar District

· Northern Lebanon

The black temple, or the temple of Nemesis (goddess of justice) is located in Monjez, Akkar, and constructed from the local basalt stone.

This temple was probably founded between the 1st and the 2nd century AD by the Romans.

One can see some Greek inscriptions on some of the stones, as well as the figure head of the Goddess.

During Byzantine times, there may have been plans to transform the temple into a church.

Scattered remains of an apse lie inside the portico of the temple.
